Isa's Story

July 29th, 2016

A setback to the setback

Posted by teri in Uncategorized

So we were supposed to go in yesterday morning for the cortisone shot for her back. That was the plan anyway. But between Monday morning (25th) and yesterday morning she had slid so far downhill that I heard the words no pet parent wants to hear from their vet: “Holy hell, what happened?”

We don’t know how or why but she lost circulation to one of her front legs and the skin and tissue was necrotizing. A smallish patch had sluffed off during the night (I thought it was a pressure sore and had a grand time beating myself up over that) and evidently a larger patch during the day at the vet’s yesterday. (Grossed even him out – not easy to do!) She also had a huge edema on (in?) her belly. That was what really what shocked the vet and the fact that she was obviously in a great deal of pain.

As of last night, she was up and moving around. Eating and drinking and on, I imagine, some really awesome pain meds. He’s giving her fluids to beef up her blood volume to restart circulation to her front leg. Honestly, I don’t even know what all he’s doing. I do know he’s doing his best and everything he can think of.

She was still doing well this morning, eating and drinking and moving around. We’re taking it one day at a time. Or the vet is and I’m going to try to. Not something I’m very good at but you can teach an old dog new tricks. Or so I hear.

I know Isa is tough and all heart. I also know it’s up to her, whether she decides to get better.

One day at a time.

  1. Holy Moly Isa! You sure are full of surprises!! But from now on, let’s make the surprises be really good ones, okay??

The challenges she’s having are really crazy! There is no way any one of us would have thought anything whatsoever about a “patch” sloughing off. So there is NOTHING to feel “guilty” about…NOTHING!!

It sounds like you are already showing improvement and that’s really good news! I’m so glad the vet is staying on top of things and taking immediate reaction. Did he indicate the possible causes and how to resolve them’

Sending tons of positive healing energy a d looking forward to GOOD UPDATES!!! I know you have your hands full, but please update when you can.

We are all cheering for Isa! She IS a tough and strong gal!!

    Love and hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

    • Thank you for pointing out that what’s going on is, in fact, nuts. It is so hard to maintain perspective and I am/was starting to think I was crazy.

Vet has no real idea of why all of this is happening. As he said, doesn’t immediately matter why, we have to get it fixed. so she’s getting fluids to up her blood volume to hopefully increase circulation in her front leg and get some healing going there. He was talking about steroids but at the time (yesterday morning) hadn’t decided on format/type and I think her pain meds are probably pretty impressive.

Realistically, I don’t expect she’ll be home this weekend although I’ve not been told that. If that’s the case, at least I can vacuum without stressing her out! The little things, right?

I’ll keep posting if/when I have anything resembling information.

      thanks again everyone!
